Dec 20, 2003
Another year is behind us. It appears the era of the boy band is officially over (Thank God!). 2003 saw the polarization of the pop charts with lots of rock and hip-hop but not a huge amount of traditional pop music. It wasn't a great year for music by any means, but there were still a lot of excellent releases.
Here's a rundown of one critic's opinion of the best singles and albums of the year. You'll notice I'm probably the only critic in America that won't put either the White Stripes or The Strokes in my best of. I think both bands are so overhyped and overrated it's ridiculous. Do critics actually listen to their music? It's fine, but not the best thing since bottled beer as most will have you believe. Best Singles of 200320. Tori Amos - "A Sorta Fairytale"
19. Ginuwine - "Hell Yeah"
18. Matchbox Twenty - "Unwell"
17. Liz Phair - "Why Can't I"
16. No Doubt - "It's My Life"
15. Simple Plan - "I'd Do Anything"
14. Black Eyed Peas - "Where's The Love"
13. Staind - "So Far Away"
12. Beyonce featuring Jay-Z - "Crazy In Love"
11. Nickelback - "Someday"
10. Eminem - "Lose Yourself"
9. Train - "Calling All Angels"
8. Bowling For Soup - "Girl All The Bad Guys Want"
7. Chingy - "Right Thurr"
6. The Donnas - "Take It Off"
5. Saliva - "Rest In Pieces"
4. R. Kelly - "Ignition"
3. Evanescence - "Bring Me To Life"
2. Fountains Of Wayne - "Stacy's Mom"
1. 50 Cent - "In Da Club"
Best Albums of 200310. Liz Phair - Liz Phair
The former alternative queen took a lot of heat for going pop with her latest album, but she did it well. The pop songs are really catchy and there's still enough angst to satisfy older fans.
9. Michelle Branch - Hotel Paper
She's one of the new breed of pop singers that actually writes her own songs and plays an instrument. Her sophomore album proved she's not a one-hit wonder and will be around for the long haul.
8. John Mayer - Heavier Things
He has a gift for writing hooky pop songs and this album is a bit harder than his breakthrough Room For Squares without losing the hooks.
