Edwin McCain Interview

Edwin McCain is going back to his roots. He started his musical career playing acoustically in clubs around Hilton Head, South Carolina. He eventually formed the Edwin McCain band and released the album Solitude in 1993. He was then signed to Atlantic Records where he broke through with his third album, Misguided Roses, which contained the smash hit "I'll Be". He had another hit with "I Would Not Ask For More" from 1999's Messenger. He released one more album in 2001 and then split with the label.

McCain's latest release is The Austin Sessions, an acoustic collection of originals and cover songs like Dire Straits' "Romeo and Juliet."

Edwin McCain recently played at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Unfortunately bad weather cut his performance short at the outdoor venue, but showing the class he's known for, Edwin went down to a local bar and played a couple of songs acoustically for the appreciative crowd. I spoke with Edwin the morning of the concert as he traveled to Sturgis.

Chad Bowar: Talk about your latest CD release, The Austin Sessions.

Edwin McCain: I just changed gears a little bit, went back to my roots and put out an acoustic album. I'm kinda getting back to the way I started, which was more of a singer/songwriter kind of thing before the record company got a hold of me.

I'm heading to Liverpool, England to record 15 new songs that will be for an album that will be out next summer.

You also have a DVD out, right?

Yes. It's called Mile Marker: Songs and Stories From The Road. A lot of it is footage from a television show that I've been shooting as a pilot for HBO. It's a lot of road stories and people we've run into along the way. It's a lot of fun.

I understand you've also landed a couple of movie roles.

I've got two independent movie roles. Liv Tyler is in one film and Leelee Sobieski is in the other one. I'm set to shoot in October.

You're becoming the king of all media. You have the CD, the DVD, the TV show, the movies and now a radio show.

I have a radio show for the Sirius Satellite Radio Network. It's an interview show. It's called The Spectrum.

On both American Idol and Star Search this year, contestants sang your songs. What's your reaction to something like that?

It's pretty funny. It's hard to look at it for me because I play the song every night. It's hard to look at it from a nostalgic point of view. Then you realize that it was 1997.
