Summer Movies 2000 - A look Ahead At Next Year's Hopeful HitsA couple years back it was dualing volcano flicks, then it was "Armagedon" vs. "Deep Impact" in a battle of falling objects from space. Now Disney and Warner Bros. prepair to clash with rival projects about the red planet. MISSION TO MARS - The year is 2009, and all contact with the first manned trip to Mars ends when the crew encounters an unusal beacon originating from the surface. A rescue mission is launched but upon arrival the astronauts discover an even greater mystery to be solved. MARS - A $60 million production, centers around a team of astronauts marooned on the planet who are slowly losing all life support systems while their female pilot orbiting above desperately tries to help before time runs out. THE FLINTSTONES 2: VIVA ROCK VEGAS - Mark Addy (The Full Monty) takes a turn as Fred Flintstone in this prequel to the 1994 original. Joining Addy in the cast are Kirsten Johnson as Wilma, Stephen Baldwin as Barney Rubble, and Jane Krakowski (Ally McBeal) taking over the role of Betty from Rosie O' Donnell. MINORITY REPORT - Steven Spielberg shelved two projects, "Memoirs of a Geisha" and a biopic of Charles Lindberg, to direct this $80 million effects-laden Tom Cruise vehicle that is already being touted within the industry as the sure-fire mega-hit for next summer. Set in Washington,D.C. in the year 2040, Cruise plays a police officer working in the departments "precrime agency" that arrests killers before they commit the crime. The agency works by way of three "precogs", a sister and two brothers with unique precognitive powers who are kept sealed within a lab and are able to pick up every murderous intent throught the country. When Cruise is fingered for a future murder, he must flee from the very organization for which he worked, staying one step ahead of capture while trying to find out what brought about the murder and stop it before it happens.
