We seem to have a driving need to make order of our surroundings, to categorize, classify, tally, register, rank, chronicle...and list.
From the Book Of Lists series, to the nightly shenanigans of David Letterman's Top 10 and this years American Film Institute list of it's 100 best movies of all time, as well as various year end best and worst lists, it's as if we can't get enough of rounding up and rating whatever we find of importance ( or that's fun ) Never one to stray from the topical or trendy, Pop Culture at Suite101 presents it's own review of the people, things, and events that were hot in 1998 - Herewith, the 1st Annual Pop Ten List: 10. The Star Wars Trailer Feelings were mixed when the Star Wars website announced in September that the official title of the first prequel was to be "The Phantom Menace". Some fans felt the title sounded hokey, others were merely puzzled. When the trailer began playing nationwide, loyal fans, long starved for the next chapter in the sci-fi saga happily forked over six bucks to sit in on any flick that happened to feature the preview in it's coming attractions - then promptly walked out once they had viewed the trailer, skipping the movie altogether. 9.Spice Girls, Minus 1 Geri Halliwell, who performed as Ginger, threw Spice Girl groupies for a loop by bowing out of the high powered group to make a solo career for herself and put the furture of the remaining quartet in doubt. Watch for her premiere album, due in 1999. 8. Time For Teletubbies! Just when you thought you couldn't top a purple dinosaur named Barney for being overly sugar-sweet to the point of making one nauseous comes the toy merchants dream imported from England. Four animal-elf like cuddly critters with T.V. screen bellies, mouse ears, and goo-goo eyes to cater to the 6-month to 2 year old telivision viewer. 7. Saving Private Ryan War is truly hell. Anyone who held the slightest romantic notion of combat was greeted with a slap into reality by Director Steven Spielberg's defining tale of World War II, with it's bold spectacle of horror and heroism, it is a film for the ages. 6. Yo Quero Mucho $$$ Taco Bell's talking chihuahua captured our hearts and wallets as customers bought up 13 million plush dogs that spoke a varierty of commercial tag lines. If your local T.B. is sold out, fear not - the corporation has placed an order for ten million more to satisify canine crazed consumers. Go To Page: 1 2
