He may bark softly, but he carries a big bite. Having taped his 17th commercial there seems no end to what has surely become one of the biggest pop culture phenomenons in recent memory, and no one could be more happier than Taco Bell that their business is going to the dogs - or in this case, dog.
He (actually a she) is the reigning heavyweight champ of the fast food industry, all 8 pounds of animal magnetism and canine charm that has taken a pit bull-like clamp on consumers hearts. Gidget, that Gorditas addicted chihuahua, who's trademark slogan of " Yo Quiero Taco Bell " has quickly become as famous a tag line as Nike's " Just Do It " and "Coke is it" and an ad executives dream. Not to mention a cash cow to her owner, who pockets a cool $20,000 each time she appears in a commercial. A dog well worth it's weight in tortillas. Behind this rise in the popularity of this little dog that could is a merchandising juggernaut of T-shirts bearing the pups mug. and just in time for Christmas the chain will roll out a collection of plush, 6-inch talking dogs that, when squeezed, utter one of four famous slogans from past and current ads. Collectors alert - buy several and stash them away, as they have quickly become a hot item for sale here on the net. The toys were test marketed recently in Omaha and sold for $2.99 at local Taco bell restaurants, later popping up on auction sites and fetching as much as $100 each. Not everyone, though, is taken in by those puppy dog eyes. Some Hispanic groups have been taken aback by the pint-sized pooch and have expressed displeasure at what they regard as a slight to their culture and as being downright racist. The League of United Latin American Citizens, the nations largest and oldest Hispanic membership organization, however, has went as far as to post a rebuttal of sorts on their website to these claims and to abate fear of a boycott.
