Free Speech and the return of Bill Maher

Jan 16, 2003 - © John Rutherford

The Bush Administration led the way on assailing free speech. Press Secretary Ari Fleischer said shortly after 9-11 that the American people should watch what they say. This warning to the people was the first step in the administration’s war against free speech, which Attorney General John Ashcroft continues to carry out today.

An atmosphere has been created where if you don’t outright support the administration, you are un-American. To be part of the loyal opposition, as it has been called over the years, is to give aid and comfort to the enemy in the eyes of Bush.

As free speech is essential to communicating ideas, an open format is needed to discuss issues like these and Bill Maher can provide it.

Hopefully, Maher can bring back the same level of debate in his new show as he originally mastered on Politically Incorrect. “Real Time” will be a live broadcast on Friday’s at 11:30 pm Eastern time and will focus on the political and cultural news of the past week. Featured will be an opening monologue and a round-table discussion, not unlike Politically Incorrect.

A major difference in the two shows will be instead of an ever changing mix of guests, the new show will draw from about eight regulars. The first show will include comedian Larry Miller and conservative commentator Ann Coulter, both Politically Incorrect veterans.
