Weapons of Mass Deception

The body count is over 500. The wounded number in the thousands. These are American casualties. American service members are dying at a rate of one a day in the war in Iraq.

Saddam is out of power and locked up. That is a good thing, but why did we do it? Saddam was evil, nobody doubts, but he heads a list of evil in the world. He may have thrown a party following the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States, but no evidence has shown a connection between him and Osama.

George W. Bush led us down the path to war in Iraq when we were already fighting a necessary war in Afghanistan, and he did it by misleading us. He bloated accounts of weapons of mass destruction possessed by Saddam. Clearly, Iraq possessed and even used such weapons in the past, but nothing more than remnants have been found so far and nothing more will likely be found. Since we now occupy Iraq, Bush is changing his tune a bit by elevating the humanitarian excuse for our efforts.

The real down side to the deception, other than the American blood shed in Iraq, is the misstep made by British Prime Minister Tony Blair in blindly following Bush into Iraq. Blair is now feeling the pain from his countrymen and hopefully this good man will survive.

CIA director George Tenent, a Clinton appointee, could possible take the fall for what is being called an intelligence blunder. The terrorist attacks could be called an intelligence blunder, but this is simply the Bush Administration taking good intelligence and turning it into what they needed by use of fabrication.

Many members of Congress, including some presidential candidates voted to authorize the war, but now question the information they were given that made the case for war. The pressure has finally forced Bush to agree to a commission to look into the intelligence flap, but wait…Bush is appointing all the members. There should be a shared responsibility in this independent commission. Not only the White House should have appointing authority, but also the Congress, both Republicans and Democrats. Otherwise, the fix is in.

With the weapons of mass destruction a major fabrication, the weapons of mass deception reside within the Bush Administration. How did we ever get so off track?

The war in Iraq is not really part of the war on terrorism. It serves to take away from the war on terrorism. The mastermind behind the attacks on our mainland is still at large, still planning more terror. But Saddam, the man who once tried to assassinate George W. Bush’s father, is no longer in power.
