Effective Feminist Influence on Policy?

"The history of mankind is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations on the part of man to woman, having in direct object the establishment of tyranny over her." - Woman's Rights Convention: Manifesto, Seneca Falls, NY, 1848.

"We have in us the blood of a womanhood that was never bought never sold..." - Olive Schreiner, Woman and Labor, 1911.

Nina Burleigh is a freelance reporter in New York who recently served as a contract reporter to Time magazine. She specialized in White House coverage with particular emphasis on coverage of the First Family. She had access to both President Clinton and the First Lady. Time described Burleigh as an author of "tough, edgy profiles."

Recently Ms. Burleigh penned an essay for Mirabella detailing a rather suggestive card game on Air Force One with President Clinton. According to Burleigh, Clinton both charmed and ogled her. Burleigh felt "incandescent" as Clinton's foot brushed against hers. Burleigh explains that "If he had asked me to continue the game of hearts back in his room at the Jasper Holiday Inn, I would have been happy to go there and see what happened."

The story could well be a figment of a smitten reporter's animated imagination. It is easy to believe that Burleigh has lost even the veneer of objectivity and is now devoted to creating romance fiction instead of reporting news. Given the allegations surrounding the President, it is also easy to believe the story. Perhaps Clinton is now lamenting an opportunity lost. In any case, the Mirabella story is a very minor boring tale of little additional import.

Howard Kurtz of the Washington Post reports a much more intriguing declaration from Burleigh. The obviously generous reporter volunteered that, "I would be happy to give him [oral sex] just to thank him for keeping abortion legal." This introduces an entire new calculus in lobbying for legislation. We now know what reward abortion support produces. What is the payoff for health care legislation or increased daycare funding? Is there a detailed published list?

Many males must now appreciate that they have been using the wrong pick up lines for years. Make a mental note: as the evening ends and the bar closes do not waste your breath to compliment a woman's appearance, just convincingly proclaim your support for the feminist agenda.

Burleigh's offer cavalierly ignores the personal suffering such humiliating behavior could inflict on the feminist sister Hillary Clinton. There is no regard for the debasement implied in the suggestion that women ought to use sexual favors as opposed to cogent argumentation to influence policy decisions. Less than a decade ago people were shocked by the allegation that a potential Supreme Court justice had talked dirty. Those charges now have a quaint Victorian ring about them now.
