The Rights of Parents of College StudentsI suggested that at registration the student could check a box if he were a dependent. The real question is why would the university not do its best to keep parents intimately involved? Why could not the rights of parents of dependent children just be explained? Could it be that it is convenient to separate the consumers of a service with those who pay for it? After all a poor student might flounder for an entire year, his parent paying tuition bills all the while, before he fails out. I suspect the real reason is not sinister, but that the university just does not want to be bothered by nosy parents calling all the time. Parents might be a nuisance, but relying on misleading information to keep parents at arms length is a disservice to the student, to his parents, and to the university that might actually benefit from more parental input. Worst of all, incidents like these can create a culture of distrust preventing parents from becoming advocates for the university.
