In Search of Pax Americana.A fellow editor liken terrorists to a multi-headed hydra who despite our best efforts and noble intent to sever them, will always have one more head from which evil will pour forth. We can never hope to vanquish evil in this world, it is necessary for balance; for every yin there must be a corresponding yang; it is the way of things. But, I am all for trying. I believe the terrorist in all their forms and agendas threaten our way of life. This new type of warfare in which the enemy lives among us, within our very shores, is perhaps the toughest test of our Constitutional form of government since the Civil War. As terrorist attacks increase (as they most certainly will do) in frequency and veracity, and the death toll climbs into the possible tens of thousands, the call will come to suspend certain civil liberties in the name of curbing terrorist activities and protecting the public. We have already seen the slow chipping away of our fundamental rights under the tenants of the so-call War against Drugs. Attorney General John Ashcroft is already calling for tougher wire-tapping laws, and senator Trent Lott has gone on record saying that he sees nothing wrong with suspending certain Constitutionally guaranteed rights until the current threat is assuaged. I see menace and more in these words. I can foresee a declaration of Marshall Law by the federal government in which the Constitution itself is suspended and the way of life we now pledge to protect is set-aside for an indefinite period. Our zeal to bring to justice—by whatever means—those who would seek to destroy us, might in the end be our undoing if we do not exercise due care and careful deliberation in the prosecution of this new war against terrorist. That in bringing about Pax America we do not become like the very terrorist we seek to vanquish; a godless evil people without principles or morals, with a one minded determination to stamp out the evil we see around every corner, no matter the cost in human lives, or the toll one our own society. Yes, we should bring those who are responsible for this unwarranted attack on our
