Another Day of Infamy - My private thoughts...

US Capitol Bldg
And then news that another plane had hit the Pentagon! What! My mind screamed, how is THAT possible? Having served in the Navy I knew that there was a not fly zone of sort around the Pentagon, surely someone was monitoring that airspace. But then there they were, the live images from the Pentagon; thick clouds of black and white smoke rose from huge gash in the building. My mind was reeling, it just couldn’t believe what was happening! It just kept repeating over and over, and over again: this can’t be real, this can’t be real, this can’t be real.

But of course it was real. It was not a movie, nor an accident, nor some sick perverse joke. Some twisted, inhuman persons who blamed the United States for all the worlds current ills, had attacked my nation, and in so doing killed thousands of my countrymen! As long as I live I shall never understand the mind of a terrorist, never! How one can justify the violent taking of innocent human life to forward a cause, however just, is beyond my comprehension as a member of the human race. What kind of mind thinks this way; what kind of heart beats so callously; what kind of soul burns so hotly with misguided, hatred? This too is beyond my comprehension!

This is the terrorist attack I always knew would come; the attack that there was virtually no defense against in a free society. The Cold War is no more, the threat has changed, and changed in a sinister and evil way, far more evil and insidious then the Soviets ever were. The new enemy hasn’t the time for nuclear weapons, the expertise to build them, nor the money to pay for them. The new enemy has no respect, grudging or otherwise, for anything American; he has only hatred, red-hot and never ending. The new enemy has no use for rules of engagement, or Geneva Conventions, or United Nations protocols, or gentlemen’s agreements; he knows only violence without rules, in which civilians are the target and not just collateral damage. The new enemy is unorthodox, canny, cunning, intelligent, scheming, ruthless, and evil; he cares not about the conventional means of war; he cares not about missile defense shields, for he has no missiles; he cares not for man’s law. The new enemy’s weapon is terror; it is homemade bombs filled
