O' If We Only Had A Leader!twisted agenda, A man without original thought, and certainly no clue. O’ if we had a leader, The frontiers we could chart, The needed mending we could start. O’ if we only had a leader, A statesman, A noble figure with equally noble bearing; An intellectual who contemplated grand ideas, A man of wisdom and vision, of passion, Who was driven to see beyond the numbers, the groups, the moneyed few, Longing to have their petty interests aired and shared at the expense of public vision. O’ if we only had a leader in that vein What lasting mark, What ever-spreading stain of righteous principled deeds Would he leave in his wake? O’ if we only had a leader, To address the very problems that leaves us undressed and wanting, Before the startled, wondering eyes of the world; That leaves the City Upon the Hillock tarnished and in bad need of repair, Her principled beginnings questioned, her moral standing diminished By the winds of pluralistic change And the tides of individualism that strangle communal thought And strangle the weakest among us. O’ if we only had a leader, Who could hold back the rains of our demise as it falls unchecked from turbulent skies. What a brightness we might see, What a greater glory our society might achieve, What a blessed, moral, and principled people we might be. O’ if we only had a leader. If we only had a leader. If we only had a leader. What a happier people we might be, From sea to shining sea, From the mountains to the deserts, Greatness would be our watchword, Our calling once again, Our destiny to fulfill If we only had a leader.
