John Ashcroft Too Conservative?...You decide...

© Vincent E. Martin

As the Senate hearings into the confirmation of John Ashcroft continue apace (today Ronnie White is set to testify), news stories continue to be published about the “real” John Ashcroft. And the picture it paints is not a pretty one in this author’s opinion. I staunchly oppose the nomination of John Ashcroft as our next Attorney General, not for one reason, or transgression, but for the pattern of intolerance and ultra-conservative dogma that is emerging that shape this man.

Try as I might to be objective (yes I have tried), I just cannot wrap my mind around, nor overlook his ultra conservative leanings. And with each article I read my resolve thickens; I do not like this man! I do not like what he stands for, how he conducts himself, or how he achieves his goals. I cannot excuse hypocritical treatment of Bill Lann Lee; his railroading of Ronnie White, or his misrepresentation of the late Mel Carnahan’s record on the partial birth abortion issue. I did not like the fact that he gave a speech to at Bob Jones University, not the fact that he accepted an honorary degree from the University he refuses to return; nor do I condone the interview he gave to a ultra right wing magazine that regularly champions the Confederacy and the KKK, in which he is so many words called the Robert E. Lee, Jefferson Davis, And Stonewall Jackson true American patriots when in fact they committed treason against our nation, and defended the indefensible institution of slavery! I do not trust this man with our nations laws!

And after listening to his assurances that he would uphold the law of the United States despite his oft times vehement opposition to them, I have to ask myself why he would want to put himself in the position to do that which would prove (if he is man of his word and convictions), morally and personally repugnant and abhorrent to him? Only one answer comes to mind; he seeks to undermine at every opportunity those laws he does not personally agree with, and which run contrary to his religious beliefs. After all, he would be in a position if confirmed to affect laws governing everything from drugs to software, immigration to firearms, to Civil Rights, to tobacco farming. Under the Department of Justice, which Ashcroft would head are the FBI, ATF, DEA, Immigration Dept., U.S. Marshall’s Service, Bureau of Prisons, U.S. Attorney’s Office, and United States Solicitor General. In addition the heads of the Justice Departments’ Anti-trust, Civil Rights, Tax Division, and Environmental & Natural Resources would all report to Ashcroft. Chilling!

John Ashcroft is now Attorney General of the United States. The next four years (or however long he serves) will tell whether or not there was any merit to the accusations of his critics.
