This March 21st is the first Earth Day of the new millenium, and a new chance for people to acknowledge and pay respect to what Margaret Mead describes as "Earth's beautiful systems of balance, between the presence of animals on land, the fish in the sea, birds in the air, mankind, water, air, and land." The most important issue of Earth Day is to increase awareness of the actions by people that can disturb this precious balance. There are lots of great links around the world wide web that are designed to help kids learn to appreciate how important Earth Day is. Earth Day activities for kids can be found at http://wstar.org/earth1.htm - including a nature hunt and an environmental quiz. This site also provides a numerous amount of links to other interesting Earth Day sites. You can read some great conservation ideas from a 6th grade little girl named Jennifer at http://norock.lhric.org/spes/earth_day.h... Earth Day Cyber hunt at http://www.sowashco.k12.mn.us/RO/teacher... allows kids to answer questions about Earth Day activities, as well as helping them learn about the significance of the holiday. Happy Birthday Earth at http://www.ccps.org/ccps/wmc/Suzanne/Ear... teaches kids to about plants, gardens and a wide variety of animals. You will also find earth care tips and links to environmental resources. And the best one I've found - Lorax's Save the Trees Game, offers children the opportunity to educate themselves about the holiday with the help of a Dr. Seuss character.
