The Incredible Story Studio is Incredibly Imaginitive

Dec 12, 1999 - © Arden Davidson

Incredible Story Studio is a Canadian TV series for children 8 to 12 in which imgination is the primary theme. This show has a unique format that centers around allowing kids to tell their own "absolutely incredible" stories on Canadian national television. Each episode adapts two kids' stories into 10 minute dramas. Plus, the child authors who are selected get to introduce their stories and are profiled on the show. The series was created by Virginia Thompson and Robert de Lint. They noticed a void in quality programming that reflected and promoted kids' creativity and imagination. What better way to celebrate kids' imagination than to give kids the chance to write creative stories and have them made into little mini-movies and shown on TV! Thompson worked with over 1200 6th, 7th and 8th graders in Ontario, and the story collection process has since extended across Canada. Today ISS has worked with hundreds of teachers and over 12,000 students - all in the spirit of celebrating kids' writing on TV! Each year, Incredible Story Studio wades through thousands of story entires in an attempt to choose up to 35 stories to include in each season. Once they've chosen the stories, the parents or teacher who entered the submission for the child are contacted and invited to appear on the show. Researchers from the show contact the author for an interview, asking them simple questions about their hobbies and interests. A photographer then visits the author's house to take photographs to be included in the show and on their web site. (They also pay $500 to every child author whose story is selected and produced.) On, November 20, 1999, Incredible Story Studio received the 1999 Children's Choice Award, which is very high honor in children's programming.
