In Springfield, Massachusetts in 1904,Theodor Geisel (better known as Dr. Seuss) was born. He went from being a student at Oxford to the husband of Helen Palmer, to one of the most famous children's authors of all time.

It all started with 1936's And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, which was originally rejected by 43 publishers! Then, in 1937 a friend published the book for him, and it went on to achieve only moderate success.

It wasn't until 1954 that Dr. Seuss published his first true success, The Cat in the Hat, which combined charming stories with wacky illustrations and and a fun, rhyming rhythm.

In 1960, a friend bet Dr. Seuss $50 that he couldn't write an entire book using only fifty words. The result was Green Eggs and Ham. His friend never paid him the money, but Dr. Seuss made a lot more than $50 from the acclaimed classic.

Geisel's achievements eventually included a total of 44 published children's books, a Pulitzer Prize (1984) and two Academy Awards.

Even after his death in 1991, Dr. Seuss continues to be the best-selling author of children's books in the world.
