Two Thumbs Up for Kids Book Reviews

Who better to review children's literature than the children themselves? After all, they know what they like and don't like - and their opinions are far more important than what some faceless adult critic thinks.

Besides, reviews written by kids are incredibly honest and straightforward. They don't bother analyzing the hidden meanings behind the words...they don't bog us down with paragraph after paragraph of literary disection. They just tell what they like about a particular book, and what they don't like. Kids communicating their opinions to other kids - what a great way to get the little ones excited about reading!

There are several places around the web where kids can read and/or submit their own book reviews. The Young Writer's Corner (a part of the London Public Library website) at http://discover.lpl.london.on.ca/kids/yn... displays and accepts new book reviews written by children, and publishes them "as is" (no editing).

In addition, The Rice School offers a free service on their website called "Book Reviews for Kids by Kids". When you visit http://riceinfo.rice.edu/armadillo/Rice/... you'll find scores of kids' book reviews, divided into categories which include Adventure,Biography, Fairy Tales, Humor and Poetry.

MCPL Children's Services at http://www.monroe.lib.in.us/childrens/re... invites visitors to see what kids think about books they've read at the library. Kids wishing to submit their own reviews need only fill out a simple form.

Another great place for kid's book reviews is The World of Reading at http://worldreading.org This site is designed to be an educational, challenging, and safe web site whose goal is to provide children of all ages with interesting materials to explore, and to encourage active participation in reading and writing through the use of electronic communications. (NOTE: They will not accept submissions that arrive without the name and e-mail of a supervising adult.)

You can also read "Emily's Reviews"; book reviews written by a teen, about books owned by the Johnson County Public Library. This site is located at http://www.jcl.lib.ks.us/kids/emily.htm

So if you want to create or purchase children's books that will have a positive effect on your child, see what other kids have to say...they know better than anyone.
