Unique Kid Lit Resources for Teachers

Jun 29, 1999 - © Arden Davidson

Between grading papers, developing lesson plans and trying to live your own life, who has time to surf the net? Well, here's a little head start for you, so you don't have to look too hard for valuable kid lit resources...

The Children's Book Council's Teacher and Librarian page at http://www.cbcbooks.org/navigation/teain... has a wealth of resources for K-6 reading and writing teachers, including a section on newer authors and illustrators, plus "13 Exciting Reading Activities for Children", which consists of activities designed to connect children to books for a lifetime.

The Children's Book Guild of Washington D.C. is a professional organization of published authors, illustrators, and specialists in children's literature. Their Speaker's List includes those members of the Guild who are willing to book speaking engagements in schools both locally and out of town. The list of available speakers can be found at http://www.childrensbookguild.org/Speake... Question and answer sessions and book sales are generally included in the presentation.

Another interesting place to check out is "Fluency through Fables" at http://www.comenius.com/fable/index.html The stated goal of this site is to "help you to improve your reading comprehension of English." To do so, the authors present short fables to read, then a variety of vocabulary questions and a page to answer longer discussion questions about the meaning of the fables.

Be sure to visit this must-see; "Cinderella Stories" at http://www.acs.ucalgary.ca/~dkbrown/cind... This page features teaching ideas by Jean Rusting for the Cinderella variants Tattercoats, Cap o'Rushes, The Twelve Months, and The Princess and the Golden Shoes. Also don't miss the list of Cinderella Stories and Resources!

And last but not least, The Guess Who and Guess What sections of "A Pocketful of Rhymes" (http://members.aol.com/Bvsangl/pocket.ht... asks kids to who identify who or what is "speaking" in a variety of educational guessing poems.

Hope this helps! And be sure to check back each week for more great places to visit!
