Writing Non-Fiction for Children

One of the most important aspects of writing non-fiction for children is deciding for which age group you plan to write. Many non-fiction topics can be explored for all age groups. For example, biographies about Abraham Lincoln could be could be written for pre-schoolers, children in elementary grades or young adults. Other topics are clearly suited to one age group more than another. You must have a sense of the market when you're deciding on the age group for a non-fiction book - so whether it's on the Internet or at the library, do your research!

Speaking of research, do you know how you plan to research your writing topic? Unfortunately, there is no clear-cut, simple "plan of action" since each book requires its own research plan, and some are much more complex than others. You can start by brainstorming - just letting your mind wander to all the possible topics and subtopics you could include in your manuscript. Write them down and then reasearch every one thoroughly, revising your lists as new information or ideas are brought to light.

It's not easy writing non-fiction for children, but if you're truly interested in your subject of choice, you CAN rise to the challenge.
