Putting Action Into Words

© Arden Davidson

Ah, words. A picture is worth a thousand of them. Action is preferred to them. And some things can't even be described by them.

Okay, so maybe words are getting an undeserved bad rap. But there's a little bit of truth in every cliche...and sometimes words do need a little "livening up." Especially when it comes to kids and reading. After all, there is nothing like the combination of interaction and fun to motivate a child to learn.

There are many places on the Web which combine fun reading with fun activities for kids of all ages. Some of these are author's homepages, like Jan Brett's Home Page http://www.janbrett.com/index.html. This extensive site is not simply a showcase for the many books Ms. Brett has authored and illustrated. It includes downloads, "piggybacks for teachers," postcards to send, and fun activities like "How to Draw A Hedgehog." Another noteworthy author's page is Andy's Crazy Kid's Stories at http://www.andygriffiths.com.au/content..... This Australian author of silly kid's stories includes a section on "just for fun" activities that are unique and a little on the wacky side.

Other sites consist of online stories and poems for kids, and include activities directly related to the content of the page. A good example of this is Guess What and it's sister site, Guess Who at http://members.aol.com/Eleehart/GuessWho... These pages consist of rhyming "guessing games" that ask children to determine what type of object, or what type of career person is "speaking," based on a funny, rhyming description.

There are also many spots for kids to post their own poems and stories. Kids are much more likely to enjoy what they're reading if they've taken a stab at writing some similar material themselves. Check out The Poetry Post at http://www.mecca.org/~graham/Poetry_Post... and The Young Writers Club at http://www.cs.bilkent.edu.tr/~david/dery... for great original kid's works and contests.

Action not words is a powerful statement. But don't take my "word" for it. Visit these sites, show them to your kids or students, and see how they respond. Chances are, these sites will make the grade!
