Maverick Magazine

When I first visited Maverick Magazine I thought, hmmmm, this is a dark little magazine.   However, I did stay and browse through Maverick.  The more I read, the more I wanted to read.  This was a very good zine with some very impressive poetry. By now I should have learned never to judge a zine by it's opening pages or it's artwork.  It's the meat you uncover inside that makes the magazine work and Maverick Magazine is heavy on the meat.   Issue number 4 has some great work by Janet I. Buck that I particularly enjoyed. Maverick has a nice mix of genres and styles that makes every page an adventure.  Tomorrow morning when you are savoring that first cuppa, wander over to Maverick and savor a few great pieces of contemporary poetry as well.  Nothing kick starts the morning like a good read.

Maverick contains a variety of poetry from both the novice and the established poet.   Each issue contains a larger body of work by a Featured Poet.  Issue number 3's Featured Poet, Bill Knott kept me reading right through to the end. When you visit Maverick Magazine, don't stop at the current issue.  Every issue is unique and worthy of a visit.

From the Editor:
Maverick Magazine (http://www.maverickmagazine.com)  is a quarterly digital literary review run by poets for poets. Maverick's mission is to advance American Poetry by creating a forum where the work of young, upcoming poets can appear along side such major literary figures as Ai, Norman Dubie, Bill Knott, Diane Wakoski, and the like. Maverick publishes poems, articles and letters relevant to poetics, interviews with poets, and, occasionally, translations of poetry. Maverick exists to forge a new direction for American Poetry in the 21st century; a direction that acknowledges our modernist roots and moves into more human, more dynamic relationship with the printed word.

Please note:
Maverick's Editor, Jefferson Adams says that there will be major changes coming over the next year.  Maverick Magazine is looking to move to a monthly publication with interactive educational content, as well as audio/video of their poets reading their featured works. So bookmark the site, visit often and stay tuned.

In my opinion:
I personally feel that Maverick Magazine is really going places.  It has the quality of work that is necessary to keep a magazine in the foreground. Maverick is in my list of zines to monitor on a regular basis.  Put it in yours.  I know you will want to see where it leads.
