Reviewing the Zines

- Read the submission guidelines carefully. Most publishers have a preferred method for submissions and will expect you to follow it. - Never submit the same poetry to several zines at the same time unless they have specified that they will accept simultaneous submissions - Use your spellchecker and then spellcheck it again, carefully - Make sure you know the name of the Editor to submit it too and the correct email address if applying electronically. Many of the zines have more that one address and editor. - When you feel you are ready to submit the poetry send it along with a SHORT bio or covering paragraph to the proper editor. And then you wait.

Waiting is the worst part of submitting work. I have found that many zines reply within a week but for some it takes anywhere from two to three weeks to hear back from them. Usually there is a time frame posted in the guidelines on the site. If you have not heard back from them after the time frame has expired, it is perfectly acceptable to query the Editor and find out if your work was received and if it has been accepted for publication. The Editor should also tell you which issue your poetry will be published in and when you can expect to see it posted on the site. Once the work is accepted it is up to you to keep track of which zine has what poetry so that you do not submit the same work to the same place again.

This week's site review is 2River. A nice, solid, reputable zine that has been around for a few years and is still going strong.

2RIVER - POETRY, ART AND THEORY

2River has made it through four years on the web and is heading into year five. Online since 1996, 2River offers the reader a vast and diverse selection of poetry, art and theory.

The 2River Review, is a quarterly, featuring both art and poetry and is published first online and then afterwards, in print. 2River Review features 8 to 10 poems per issue along with some very impressive artwork. Before submitting poetry, it is always a good idea to read a few issues and get a feel for the type of poetry that the magazine is looking for.

If you would like to submitt poetry to 2River, submission guidelines can be found here:
