Young and Free

"Australian's all let us rejoice, for we are young and free.."

Well, the election is over. Long live the election. We get to do it all again in 3 years.

We survived the hype, the promises and the handouts. But did we achieve anything? Anything at all?

Did we keep them honest? Do we think that they will honour their promises? Do they truly represent us?

Well they sure don't represent those people held in detention centres. Or have we forgotten them? We may be young and free but those children still being held, yes they are still there, are getting older and are definitely not free.

I wonder if you considered where Australia stands on human rights when you cast your vote. Or don't you care? Our politicians, in the main, don't care.

Imagine waking up every day to a life behind fences and razor wire when all you did was to escape persecution with your parents. Where is their hope? What are their dreams?

Flight

Fleeing persecution, To save my family's lives, Act of desperation, Dealing with those we despise

Taken on board rusting hulks, Avoiding certain slaughter, Journey across the sea, Without food or water

Sailing into the sun, The boat slowly sinking, Panic overcomes us all, What could we have been thinking?

Dark shapes now visible, In the green foaming sea, Where is our rescuer?, What is our fate to be?

Ships on the horizon, Is our help now at hand?, Are these white faced pirates, With guns drawn in their hands?

Taken by force of arms, To this, another land, Locked up behind fences, In a place we cannot stand

Waiting for assessment, By people who do not care, On this island prison, We are filled with despair

We are no better off, Than if we'd stayed behind, At least we would have been, Tortured by our own kind

Sew our lips together, And starve ourselves to death, Protest the situation, Consume our last faint breath

Is this not the lucky country?, The land of the fair go?, Where people are all equals?, We certainly thought so

Razor wire around my heart, Dripping sad tears of blood, Mr. Prime Minister, Is this how you quell the flood?
