Aids In SubSaharan Africa - Part 6 Our Response

© Ken R Allen

The situation in Africa seems to be overwhelming. People see the problem as so big that what little they can do appears to them to be insignificant in the scheme of things. Rather than become engaged at the heart level, some simply shrug their shoulders and go into a form of denial to avoid internal self-judgment.

I believe that each of us is like a tiny drop of water, which when combined can become first a trickle, then a flow, then a stream, then a mighty river, then a water current leading into a wave that becomes a tsunami which, when it crashes onto land, can change the face of the World forever.

Each of us can play a part in changing this World. And it doesn't matter how big or how small that part is. For the strength comes form being a part of it. The strength of the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. It's the momentum that is built up that does it. And it all starts with just a little drip. Each of us just doing what we can with what we've got.

So what is it than we can do?

1. Pray about it. Pray for the people and their need for food, medicines, clothing, housing, education, vocational training, opportunities to break the poverty cycle, jobs, and people who care about them. Pray for freedom from the tragedy of the HIV/Aids pandemic.

2. Tell others. Raise awareness of the issues in whatever form you can. Write, speak, promote, publish, mail out, engage in discussions. The more people who are aware, the greater the response to the needs.

3. Raise money for or contribute money to the charities that represent us on the ground in Africa. Most of us cannot reach the African people directly with funds, and in many cases it would be inappropriate. But we can raise money for and funnel the money through organisations that can be trusted to use the entirety of the funds at grass roots level. There are such organisations in most countries around the World. Find the one that touches your heart and give what you can. $US30 feeds an African family of 5 for a month with the basic nutrient requirements. For many of us in western society this is not much to forego.

4. Volunteer to go to Africa. One of the greatest gifts that you can give to yourself is to volunteer to make a difference in the lives of others. In Africa they need doctors, nurses, builders, farmers, teachers, administrators and people who can just sit and care by providing comfort. Volunteering is not for everyone as it requires that you move out of your comfort zone. But my personal experience is that it provides a win-win experience. You will get a life changing experience by giving of your life to others.
