As fall rolls around, the
business of poetry picks up steam with new book
releases, poetry contests, and chapbook competitions.
We've culled through tons of email and selected some
items of special interest for those who try to publish
poetry as well as those who just like to read it.
Contests of Note Slipstream Press holds an annual Poetry Chapbook competition. Prize is $1,000 and 50 copies. Guidelines at site. My opinion about this contest: Win it and grin. This is a high profile quality publisher. So to Speak, a feminist journal of the arts announces its poetry contest. Judge is Lyn Lifshin, whose poetry this editor enjoys. An article about Ms. Lifshin is archived under "Articles" at poetry/suite101.com. The journal did not provide a Net address, but here's the snail mail address: "So to Speak"/George Mason University/4400 University Drive, MS2D6/ Fairfax, VA 22030-4444. Deadline is October 15, 1999. My opinion: I'm going to enter it, so why don't you? What've we got to lose? The only person looking at my latest poem is my dog, and he's got cataracts. Suite101.com Editor Susan Maree Jeavons has put together an excellent poetry contest at Child Abuse and Recovery with some nice prizes. What do I say about this? She's a really nice person who works hard to help children. Actually, I think she'd help anybody. Her contest is on the up and it'll be fair. I can't say that about the last contest I entered (not mentioned anywhere here, by the way). Take a look and post a poem. The Wee Poet Tree announces a contest themed TIME. Deadline is December 31 at midnight. Prizes. What do I think? The site editor Anne-Bryant Hamon is a dedicated poet, and she funds the contest out of pocket. Genuine motives and an attractive site. Janet Buck is featured there. What's not to like? Poetry Super Highway has announced the winners of the 1999 PSH Poetry Contest. Winning poems are online at PSH. Rick Lupert did a great job with this event. I'm happy to come up with a way to talk about this site, because I just received notice that I will be featured as Poet of the Week at the PSH site September 26-October 3. If you haven't visited yet, go ahead and see what it's all about. PSH carries news about poetry, classifieds, and Go To Page: 1 2
