Part III - How to survive the ravages of a neuropathic disease


  • Wheelchairs The seat must be wide enough to prevent the build-up of heat from the rubbing of the wheels against the sides of the chair thus possibly causing heat discomfort from affecting your thighs. A comfortable cushion is an added plus. There are Gel cushions that are quite comfortable. The handles should be high enough to allow the person who will most likely help to push you - to do so in comfort. If the handles are too low - then they will cause the person pushing you to have back and arm strain.

  • Physical Therapy Is a very important aspect of your defense. Some physical therapists tend to want to overdo your therapy. Take care to ensure that you do not suffer pain and strain from the therapy. It is best to begin with a very minimal program - in which you perform small amounts of a particular exercise for just a few repetitions. If weights are prescribed - then to use just the smallest possible weight or none at all.

    Also - it is best to begin with a small amount of scheduled time. Then - as the program progresses, you can increase your total therapy time, and the weights and number of repetitions. Always - becareful not to exceed your pain tolerance limits. After the therapy session - you may experience tiredness. But never - should you experience an increase in pain. For if so - then the therapy session involved too much work.

  • Therapeutic Massage Is often beneficial. But - the masseuse or masseur must be RSD (or neuropathy) knowledgeable. It may be that you are extremely sensitive to touch and pressure. The masseur (euse) must understand the nature of the disease so that you will not suffer unduly.

  • Stress Reduction Is a very necessary part of the overall program. Stress produces neurotoxins that intensify your pain. Thus - less stress - less neurotoxins. The pain from your disease causes a great deal of stress. There is no need to add to it.

  • Achieving a Sense of Well-Being This is the most important aspect of this program. By performing these elements of the program as suggested in Parts I, II, and III - you will certainly gain a sense of well-being that you may not experience currently. While this is an intangible - it is also key to your defense against the neuropathies.
