How to survive the ravages of a neuropathic disease

stress due to the low blood sugar condition. Keeping your blood sugar sufficiently high can best be done minimally by drinking orange juice and or eating a small meal every 3 to 4 hours.

  • Sufferers of neuropathic disease are very sensitive to pressure. So - to ensure that you can achieve reasonably good sleep - add a smooth foam pad to the top of your mattress. The pad should be at least 1.5 inches thick - more if you can find one. The idea is to remove all resistance to your body's projection points where it meets the mattress. Do not get one of the "egg crate" types of pad - for you will feel each of the indentations and projections.

  • Purchase clothing that feels good to your skin. The material must not scratch or cause irritation. The inner seams should be finished so as to be smooth. The clothing tags at the rear of the neck should be carefully removed - if they irritate. The same idea of comfort should apply to your socks or stockings and shoes as well.

  • Most of the women that suffer from neuropathic disease are mothers of young to teenage children. Thus - there is a great tendency to overwork. When you overwork - you may cause a flare-up (or just a flare) of your disease. These flares can be very debilitating. If it is at all possible - avoid overwork.

  • Insulate yourself from temperature extremes. When going from a warm temperature to a cold one - put on extra suitable clothing. When going from a cold temperature to a warm one - take off appropriate articles of clothing. Most neuropathies cause you to be temperature sensitive to the extent that when experiencing an extreme change of temperature - your pain will increase.

  • Be prepared for those instances when the barometric pressure falls below the normal "sea-level" pressure of 30 inches of mercury. Most neuropathies produce a gas as the result of the activities of the myelitic cells that are the cause of some neuropathies. This gas will expand when the atmospheric pressure falls. This expansion will cause a great increase of pain. There is little that you can do to avoid the effects of low barometric pressure - but you can anticipate this event and perhaps ingest extra medications to avoid the pain that will ensue therefrom.

Next week - I shall discuss more of the importance of diet and vitamin
