Here we are at the beginning of another New Year. Once again we are faced with the tradition of making New Year's Resolutions. Some of us dread the annual tradition, while other embrace it and love the chance for starting all over and wiping the slate clean.
Why is it that the turn of the year seems to make so many people focus on changing themselves and that nearly all resolutions have to do with changing our physical appearance? Why is the start of a New Year a "second chance" or a "fresh start"? Why couldn't the beginning of every new day or every new month be a turning point? I guess a New Year without resolutions would be like a New Year without Dick Clark in Times Square. Whether you make one resolution or a dozen, New Year's resolutions are all about change. Promises we make to ourselves to change for the better, to rid ourselves of our bad habits and to make ourselves more likeable, even if only to ourselves. If you are reading this article I'm willing to bet that this year's resolution is to lose weight. If you haven't made that resolution this year, I'm sure you've made it in years gone by. And you aren't alone - some of us make the resolution to lose weight each and every New Year. But like most resolutions, we don't stick to them. I know I don't. Every January 1st of the last 15 years or so my resolution was to lose weight, or to develop a more healthy approach to eating. If I had kept my resolution even one year of all those 15, I may have been able to have a different resolution the following year. But like everyone else, I fall victim to the media who prey on us at this time of year with twice as many television and magazine ads for diet and exercise. You can't escape it, even if you try. We might not be able to avoid the television ads, but we don't have to pay attention to what they are saying! This year instead of making a resolution to go on a diet, focus on something totally un-weight related. Like reading more books, or making your bed every day. Picking something that's easy to do will be easy to accomplish and you'll be successful! Wouldn't it be nice next year to realize that you've stuck to your resolution for the whole year?
