Twentieth Century Fox's new movie "Shallow Hal" will be out in theaters on November 9th. Long before the trailers began to appear in the theaters this movie had overweight people up in arms. If you haven't seen the trailers or commercials, or ever heard of Twentieth Century Fox's upcoming picture "Shallow Hal" let me tell you what it's about.
Hal's father's dying wish was for Hal to date only young and pretty women. Hal (played by Jack Black) obeys his father's last wish uttered from his deathbed. Sometime later in life Hal is hypnotized into seeing women only for their inner beauty. Soon after, Hal meets an obese woman (played by Gwyneth Paltrow). Rosemary is kind and humorous and Hal falls in love with her. At the end of the movie Hal's hypnotic spell is broken and he finds out the truth about Rosemary. Hal is then forced to decide if he can love Rosemary anyway. Paltrow plays both parts of Rosemary - the thin and beautiful Rosemary Hal sees and the obese Rosemary everyone else in the movie sees. (In the movie, Paltrow wears a fat suit to make her look like she weighs over 300 pounds). The premise of the movie is good... You should love someone for WHO they are, not what they look like. But if the purpose of this movie is made to express a meaningful moral lesson, why pick Gwyneth Paltrow to play Rosemary? The message I get from this movie is that thin is beautiful. If the "inner self" of the character Rosemary is thin and beautiful isn't that really the message they are coming across with? Once again Hollywood is sending out a message that "Thin Is In" and "Fat is NOT where it's at". How many movies are they going to make where fat people and obesity are depicted as the butt of all jokes? One scene in this movie shows Rosemary jumping into a pool and launching a small child into a nearby tree while nearly emptying the pool of water. I know this is only an exaggeration and I can see the humor in it. I can take a joke as well as the next person, but after movies like The Nutty Professor and Big Mamas House, I think that we've have enough "Fat Humor" to last us a while. I won't be going to see this movie because I won't contribute to the humiliation of overweight people everywhere. Will you go see the movie? Take our poll and see what other people think!
