Making First Contact


discouraged for making first contact with a potential director, producer, or publisher. Those people simply don't have the time. Nor is it wise to use the telephone to find out the status of your submission; send a letter if you're impatient and must know.

However, that said, do use the telephone to:

  • Double check addresses, names of contacts, and their titles
  • Determine that they are still accepting submissions
  • Establish whether cutoff dates exist, and if so, what are those dates

When contacting publishers, producers, directors, editors, and dramaturgs, keep in mind that they are not just looking for scripts; they are also looking for professional writers to work with. You are presenting yourself as a product as much as you are presenting your plays. First impressions are important, and it is imperative that both products appear to be of professional quality.
