Computer Imaging in Plastic Surgery

The wrinkles are fading. The brow level is rising. The sagging skin in the face is changing position. The computer is on, and the plastic surgery consultation is under way.

Computer imaging begins by photographing the patient in the office and projecting the image to the computer screen. The patient and surgeon can then address features that can be altered through cosmetic surgery procedures. A wide range of procedures can be simulated, including brow lifts, facelifts, eyelid surgery, nasal surgery, chin surgery, and body contouring such as liposuction. The changes from such procedures are then simulated while the patient watches.

The computer can enhance communication during a physician consultation, addressing the needs of today’s educated patient. Men and women can express their goals more clearly, develop a better understanding of what areas of the face or body might be affected by a given procedure, and work with the plastic surgeon to individualize their treatment. A more thorough understanding of the procedure can help reduce patient anxiety and maximize the chances of a satisfying result.
