Where to get info on the Internet

Whether you have affiliated with a band, have a teacher or not, you may wonder what resources are available on the Internet. These articles are a good start, with links to aid your search, but the links are only a starting point.

A good source of information is http://www.bagpiper.com. They have articles on learning to play the pipes, maintenance topics, tips about playing at a wedding, a bulletin board, event calendar, even a celtic calendar describing dates of historical significance.

If you have a news feed, or even if you do not, there is the news group rec.music.makers.bagpipe. Several very knowledgable pipers frequent the group. I've seen a post from a member of the 78th Fraser Highlanders. If you don't know who they are, check out their website http://www.78thfrasers.net. You can read indepth discussions on various minutae of the piping world. There is a drawback, of course. You have to wade through the flames of the newsgroup to sift out the priceless gems of lore. Not only are the flames often fascinating, you can learn about the ethos of piping in those discussions.

Finally, you can search the web using a search engine. I put bagpiping in www.google.com and found ten pages of stuff. The first page (topped by Bill Gority's Bagpiping Page, http://members.aol.com/wgority/home.html . It's a truly excellent page on a variety of pipes) consisted of personal pages, the electronic magazine for the Eastern United States Pipe Band Association, and some other pages. Google is a good search engine so it would be worth your while to see what's out there on the Internet.

Although affiliating with a band or teacher is probably the best way to learn all the tips and tricks there are to the pipes, the Internet can provide a wealth of information.
