On this day, the official first day of the Christmas season, I would like to send this message to all of you music lovers: Share your music!
Study is fine, but playing music is the point of it all. You can play beautiful music forever in your basement or living room, and that would be nice, but try inviting one person to listen to you play and your music will have a whole new meaning for you. It doesn't matter if you are just a beginner, or if you only know one song. Make an effort to play for someone. Learn Jingle Bells or Silent Night, or any song that is part of your spiritual tradition. When you play it for your family you will feel how special it is to share your music with others. Encourage someone to sing along with you. It will be much easier to persuade them at this time of year. Pick up a Christmas song book and play the melodies on the piano. It will lift your spirits and those of the people around you. Holiday CDs are great, but hearing someone play a holiday song on their own instrument is heartwarming. You can warm someone's heart just by playing a melody. Make a call to a retirement home in your area. Odds are very good they would love to have you play holiday music for them once or twice this season. Here is how I will share my music with you: My favorite carol is Oh Come, All Ye Faithful. If you would like to hear my personal piano version of it, here's a Real Audio recording. And here's an MP3 recording. If you would like to play it yourself, here's the piano score. This is in .gif format, so all you have to do when the picture is loaded into your browser is right click on it and go to "Save Picture As" or "Save Image As" (depending on whether you use Internet Explorer or Netscape) to save the image on your hard drive. Then just print it out. This is straight off the piano, in my own handwriting. Happy Holidays! Go To Page: 1
