I'm Too Old to Learn How to Play the Piano!There's no doubt that learning to play the piano as an adult is a different experience than learning to play as a child. But, anyone can learn. All you need to do as an adult is make a little space in your life and have the right attitude. When we are children, most often the motivation to play an instrument is to please Mom and Dad. As an adult, you probably do not have that motivation. Other childhood motivations for learning an instrument might be: There are probably many others. The problem with learning an instrument as an adult is there frequently is no social framework around the learning, and no person prodding you to practice. You really have to take charge and motivate yourself. Discover the reason you want to play the piano. Remember that simply "Because I have always wanted to" or "I regret that I didn't have the opportunity as a child, and I would like to do it now" may only get you through the "novelty" period when everything is new and exciting. As soon as the novelty wears off and you have a clear view of the long journey ahead of you, you may want to quit. To maintain your high level of motivation, establish a practical reason to learn to play the piano. If you cannot establish a practical reason, you may have to accept that piano playing will be a fun exploration for you that may or may not become a permanent part of your life. That's OK, too. Here are some possible practical uses for your new piano skills: Once you have your motivation, the next step is to set aside the necessary time to learn. It can be difficult to squeeze in practicing around adult responsibilities. If you can plan a time when there are fewer family members at home, you may be more successful. Also, you may consider using an electronic keyboard with headphones so that you can practice while other people are in the room. Then, you need to find a teacher.
