I presume you have enough knowledge, but what about your skills? Do you know what the required skills for chosen vocation are? Required skills are: patience, genuine interest in people, good health, physically fit, problem-solving skills and good communication skills. You will need all of that for a good career in physiotherapy. To be sure whether this is a profession for you proceed analysing the following items - ask yourself: • Do I have the strength (emotional and physical) to work every day with handicapped, ill and persons in great pain? • Do I feel too much sorrow for children in wheel chair? • Do I think that a person without limb shouldn't be happy ever again? • You should possess skills for understanding, compassion; ability for education; physical strength for handicap persons? • You should be strong enough to motivate people to do exercises that hurt, to push them beyond that edge and in the same time remind them of their limitations? • Are you a person with the power to do that? I think you are! Join us. Become a physical therapist! Be a respected member of the health care team with others in teamwork: physicians, social workers, occupational and speech therapists and other health care professionals. We have the same goal - to accomplish an individual's health needs and wants. Except as part of a health care team, physiotherapists may work independently in private practice, within the school system or as industry consultants. Besides practicing physical therapy, this work involves extensive contact, and not just medical but also supportive, with both patients and their families. Therefore you should train good presentation of yourself and communication skills. It is vital in this vocation. You will have short time of contact with patients and you need to communicate with them suitably in that short time. Similar traits also are needed to interact with the patient's family. Your patients may be: babies and children, acute ill and chronically ill persons, elders and healthy persons who will only need your advice or supervision. The Physical Therapist evaluates patients; designs individual treatment plans, re-assesses patient progress, and supervises other therapy personnel.
