"If you're happy and you know it, clap your hands!" (Clap, Clap!)

I'm sure each and every one of you recognizes this "movement" song. It's mainly for children, but I think adults like it too! :) There are many "children's" songs that those of us with small children can use to start a "healthy" lifestyle for them, and at the same time keep ours going! Below, I'd like to share a few with you. (Just incase you don't know any. :) Many of these are words that are traditionally put to music, but can be used as "chants" as well. I will list them for you as "chants".

1. Reach For The Sky "Clap your hands, touch your toes, turn around and put your finger on your nose. Flap your arms, jump up high, wiggle your fingers and reach for the sky." (By Pam Beall.)

2. Baby Bird

"Here's a baby birdie, he's hatching from his shell." (on floor on hands and knees, head down between arms) "Out comes his head," (pop head up) "And then comes his tail." (get up on knees, as if to put tail in the air) "Now his legs he stretches," (stand all the way up) "His wings he gives a flap." (flap arms with elbow bent like wings) "Then he flies, and flies, and flies, now what do you think of that?" (move around the room flapping arms) "Down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down." (spin around and around and around the room) "BOOM!" (fall to the ground) (By Pam Beall)

3. Now Tall, Now Small "I'm stretching very tall." (go from squatting down to standing) "And now, I'm very small." (go back down to squatting on floor) "Now tall," (back up) "Now small," (back down) "Now I'm a tiny ball." (curled up on the floor into a ball)

4. Walking, Walking *Can be sung to the tune: Are You Sleeping?* "Walking, walking, walking, walking," (walk around room) "Hop, hop, hop, hop, hop, hop." (hop around room) "Running, running, running. Running, running running." (run around room or area, or just in place) "Now let's stop, now let's stop." (stop, and stand at attention, arms at sides)

I try to do all of the above movememts with my son quite often. Actually, it keeps me in shape too! :)

Until next time, when I share more movement activities, march in place... come on, GET THOSE KNEES UP! LOL!
