Halloween, The Night Before "All Saints" Day And Alternatives

© Gina Dronenburg

Many parents are thinking twice about having their children dress as monsters, witches or demons of any sort this year. Many alternatives have cropped up here and there, and not just for safety's sake, but for the sake of a variety of strong and different beliefs concerning our society and what we may be teaching our children inadvertently.

Following, I have listed some alternatives to the "typical" celebrations:

Have your children dress as their favorite "friendly" and "loving" characters. Then, have the children "trick or treat" for UNICEF, or another important charity of your choice. Have your children visit neighbors, and take them special little treats as a sign of love and friendship. Some of the treats can be things like friendship bookmarks, bracelets, pencils, little orange snack crackers with cheese or peanut butter between, (In keeping with the autumn colors) erasers, etc.

If you decide not to take your children "trick or treating", try some of the following :

Plan a sleepover party for your children!

Make "Pumpkin Punch": Use a real pumpkin. Scoop out the inside of a large pumpkin. Put a mixing bowl inside. Fill the bowl with apple cider, orange punch or any other beverages.

Make "Marshmallow Dip": Use the large marshmallows. Insert a skewer or popsicle stick in the marshmallow. Dip it in sweet melted chocolate. (They'll need the next game to get rid of the "sugar" wiggles!)

Play a fun game: Have the children each bring a sleeping bag. In this game, each child switches sleeping bags, while the person who is "it" counts to 10 in another room. When she/he is done, they will go into the room and guess who is in which sleeping bag. (The children should cover their heads, and can disguise their giggles and voice, but if they are guessed, they must be honest. They then become "it".) The kids ADORE this game, and will play it for quite awhile. This ought to get rid of some energy!

Another fun activity:

Have the kids paint each other with Water Soluble Fluorescent paint. (Make sure it is water soluble. This is safe.) (Paint on mustaches, beauty marks, scars, etc.) Use many different colors. When it is dry and you are ready, turn the lights off, and have a blacklight so you can see them glow! They will love it.

Have a happy "Night Before"! I'll see you again in two weeks.
