Mind Control

Relaxation is a learned response to any stressor, whether it be eustress (good stress) or agitating and frustrating stress. However, many of us never learned to "relax" as children. Either no-one showed us, or for some reason we felt that we should be "doing something." Many of our parents regarded a person who spent time "relaxing" as being lazy. It's no wonder that so many of us as adults can't seem to understand why we are constantly stressed. It's because we don't take the time to purposely and consciously "relax."

I would say that within the past 5 decades, people have started to realize the importance of taking a "time out" and "relaxing." It is no longer considered a "lazy" act to sit and meditate or "relax" for an extended period of time. As a matter of fact, it is one of the most needed of acts for our mental and physical health.

As parents then, we can all see where our own children will benefit if we begin to teach them to relax, meditate, and feel good. Once learned in childhood, relaxation and meditation can become a chosen act. It can calm an angry little one, soothe a sleepy sick one, and even excite a spunky willing one!

Meditation and relaxation can help your little ones accomplish the following:

First and Formost, it will help them to consciously relax when there is a stressor presenting itself.

It can help them to become aware of their bodies, how their muscles feel when they are tense, or when they are "relaxed." It helps with muscle control as well.

They will learn to "pay attention" to when they NEED to "relax." They will be in control!

They will see what different muscles "feel" like when moved, and the "sensations" they get from doing those different movements.

And last but not least, their sense of "self" and self esteem will skyrocket because they are in "control" of how they "want" to feel. (Being in control is one of the huge makers or breakers of self-esteem!)

Now that you've learned a bit about relaxation and how it can help our children, I recommend a visit to Children's Meditation Series for a Five Part Meditation Online Program designed especially for children and their Moms and Dads! It's Free!
