Two More

Parents, below you will find the last two methods of teaching being covered in this three-part article. (Be sure to read the others!)

Bank Street Developmental-Interaction Model

This style accomodates different ways of learning by allowing the student to be in control. The control is gained when the student is free to choose the level at which they interact. While interacting with the teacher and subject, the students usually are offered a number of different criteria for learning. Movement around the learning area is stressed, and the criteria is given by allowing them to work in large groups, small groups, by speaking, pairing up with other students, writing, reading silently, brainstorming, forming and answering questions, using the blackboard etc... Each type of criteria offered allows students to learn in whichever ways they feel comfortable, allowing true learning to take place.

Activity

Let's go Camping! (Or at least pretend we are!) Dress yourself and your kids as if you were going on a long camping journey! (Kids love to dress-up!) Get camping supplies like a backpack, bug spray, a flashlight, water bottle, and even a sleeping bag. (use the sleeping bag at naptime!) Cook a snack that many "campers" might eat "on the trail"! Get together some graham crackers, marshmallows, chocolate bars and use them to make smores! Let the children make tents for themselves by placing blankets over tables or over chairs and sides of their beds. You can even let them go outside and find a walking stick to keep with their camping gear. Pretend to have a fire and sing a camp song around the fire. Below is a song for you:

(Sing this to the tune "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star")

I'm going camping, can't you see? I'm going camping, won't you come with me? First I'll pitch my tent on the ground, Then I'll make a fire as we all gather round. I'm going camping, can't you see? I'm going camping, won't you come with me?

Next I'll cook on the open fire. Then I'll tell stories 'till we all get tired. And when the stars are twinkling bright, We'll sleep in our tents 'till the morning light. I'm going camping, can't you see? I'm going camping, won't you come with me?

When I see the morning sun I'll wake right up, 'cause the days begun. There's so much for us to do, Swimming, Fishing and Hiking too! I'm going camping, can't you see? I'm going camping, YESSIREE! (Say this last line loudly!)

The Teaching Strategies' Creative Curriculum

Because those who employ this method believe that young children learn best through interaction with the social and physical environment, this style focuses on the organization of their "learning" environments.
