Bored No More!Children and play! Who would have thought that playing would become one of the most important aspects of a child's development? There have been many theories over the years about what play is, and how it affects the emotional development of children. One thing that all these theories have in common though, is that play, in its simplest form, is the beginning of the long road to life-long learning. (Not to mention the great physical movement, and coordination skills children gain!) In the last article, I covered 2 of the 5 types of play that have been discovered. Now, I will cover the other 3! (If you didn't get a chance to read the last article, go to previous articles and take a few moments to catch up! You'll be glad you did!) An activity is included after each type of play for your convenience! Social Play Has an all-around affect on general social development. Group play is learned, allowing experience in gaining their sense of self in comparison to others. The ability to cooperate, and to become a part of what they believe in (or at least to see if they believe in what is happening). Their communication skills are strengthened, allowing their thoughts, likes, and dislikes to be shared. (This enables them to survive in many group settings.) Activity: Social Play Have an ice-cream party! Even with this type of party, a special theme should be chosen. (For example, making sundaes, banana splits, etc. You could even get specific and say,"We are going to make butterscotch sundaes!") Put a plastic drop cloth under your table, unless this is done on a porch or deck that can be hosed off! Put different toppings in bowls on the table with a small spoon in each, and let the children have at it! Moms and Dads, you will have to keep some kind of order in the group of children making their sundaes! To do it themselves is a special privilege that we seldom give our children, and they will LOVE it if you will! Just keep things within YOUR boundaries! Try to use as many HEALTHY TOPPINGS as possible (for example, raisins, dried fruit, dried cereal like Cheerios, or Graham Squares. Colorful toppings attract their attention!) You can think of many things! Grapes, coconut, even crushed nuts! After they eat, have a game of hide and seek outside, or inside if you are brave! (They will need the outlet for their energy after they follow your directions!)
