Humor Me Gym Etiquette Etiquette is everywhere for everything and the last thing you want to think of when you head to the gym is your etiquette. Well, like it or not, there are a few things you should consider on your next trip. Dress What you wear is personal to you and should be comfortable and easy to move in.Do you sweat a lot when you exercise? If you do, you should consider a wicking fabric such as coolmax as your top. Avoid the tank top and sport bra look when drenched with sweat. No one wants to get on a machine after you and the sweat that flicks off during a high impact activity, like running, is not appropriate. Do you like short shorts? Well, “short” shorts are fine when you are going out for a long run because they are comfortable. But let’s consider once you move into the strength training area. Performing a leg press with “short” shorts is not appropriate. When strength training, consider longer shorts or pants. Do you wash your exercise clothes? I’m not kidding. There are millions of people who wear their exercise clothes over and over without washing them for days or weeks. Sure, you might get a couple days wear out of something, but if it smells…wash it. Especially if you exercise in a small, closed in facility, it is not appropriate to dominate the air supply. Do you think of the gym as glamorous? Exercising should be something you do for yourself, so go for it. However, dousing yourself with perfume or aftershave is not the right idea. When fragrances are combined with sweating you are again dominating the air supply. Plus, some people’s respiratory systems are irritated by the additional fragrances in the air. Makeup Ideally no, if you are planning on a heavy, cardiovascular, sweat dripping workout. Your skin cells need to breathe and wearing makeup can cause clogging and blemishes.Machines Wipe down or not? In many facilities there will be employees available to wipe down the equipment. If there are solution bottles within your reach then it is recommended that you wipe down the equipment after use. Pay attention to the spray of the product. It isn’t necessary or safe to spray your neighbor. What if I’m waiting for a machine? If you are waiting on a machine it is not appropriate to stand there and stare at the other person until they get off. Consider moving to another machine, filling up your water bottle, etc. until they finish.
