Fit For Travel

Feb 27, 2001 - © Mindy Herzog

How exciting…you’re off for a two-week vacation, a one week conference, or maybe you’re just going out of town. Whatever the reason, you need not stop being active just because you’re away from your gym. Many times we become addicted to our exercise atmosphere and don’t know how to do without. Here are some tips to keep you healthy, full of energy, and fit for travel.

Hydration…traveling by air really takes it out of you, water that is. Have you ever noticed that your body swells after being in flight? No matter what mode of transportation you choose for travel, make sure you stay well hydrated. Stay away from alcoholic beverages and cokes, which will contribute to your dehydration. Drink small amounts of water periodically throughout your trip in order to eliminate the number of trips to the restroom.

Water…for play. If you are fortunate to have a pool, lake, or ocean nearby, use it for a little training. If it’s large enough you could actually get your laps in. If it’s a small pool, consider jogging in place, jogging back and forth, calisthenics in the water, exercises on the side of the pool, or anything that you enjoy that will keep you moving and using your large muscle groups will work.

Strength Training…don’t want to lose that strength over time? Consider throwing a resistance band in your luggage. These inexpensive and lightweight bands can be used in a variety of ways to keep up your strength. Try using your room. Consider wall squats, tricep dips using the bed and a chair, push-ups on the floor or wall, bicep curls with the closest heavy object, and others…just have a look around to see what you can do.

Aerobic…keep up the intensity. I don’t recommend step or high impact aerobics in the hotel room. The neighbors can be very annoyed and hotel service could interrupt your workout. Consider walking or running as your exercise. A pair of sneakers will fit nicely and easily into your luggage. Check whether your hotel room has an exercise facility.

Mind…relax. All traveling can be stressful. Try waking up early and sitting on the beach or by the pool for some quiet relaxation time. Turn on some relaxing music and sit in a bubble bath. Practice Tai Chi or Yoga in your room. Practice Tai Chi or Yoga outside. Sit and relax under a tree. Just find some time to take a breather and relaxing break in your day.
