Enter the Philosophy Portal

Cust stated,"My personal philosophical interests lie in the areas of social, moral, political philosophy, applied ethics and applied philosophy, especially philosophical counseling and consulting." He explained that he is Founding Director of the Center for Applied and Professional Ethics, also at CMSU. He is also the sole owner of Philosophical Services, an independent consulting firm which bills itself as "the first and only source for MA and Ph.D. qualified philosophical consultants and counselors for corporations, organizations, and individuals," and which provides graduating philosophy majors with listings of job opportunities in business and industry.

As I almost always do when talking with creators of Internet-based philosophy resources, I asked Cust for his thoughts and opinions about the Internet as a medium for philosophy. He said, "I think the Internet is not only a prime medium for the study and pursuit of philosophy, it is also a prime source for philosophical inquiry in all the major areas of philosophy. There are, for example, metaphysical questions concerning the ontology of the entities in cyberspace, epistemological questions concerning how we can acquire knowledge of these entities, moral questions concerning privacy, access to the net, as well as access to some of the content on the net. This is not, of course, an exhaustive list of philosophical areas of investigation on the Net but merely a short list of some of the more obvious areas . . ."

Cust's own growing site is itself an example of the Internet's expanding potential as both a vehicle and an object of philosophical inquiry. The Philosophy Portal's main page confidently poses to visitors the question, "How are we doing so far?" The answer is, very well, indeed.
