Are you a teacher or a student looking for quality print or electronic publications or other resources in philosophy? If so, include among your Internet destinations the Philosophy Documentation Center at Bowling Green State University.
The Philosophy Documentation Center is a non-profit organization that has been serving the philosophical community since 1966. Its self-described mission is "the production and worldwide distribution of a variety of high-quality publications, including philosophical directories, bibliographies, scholarly journals, and instructional software for philosophers." In addition, the Center's professional services include subscription fulfillment, typesetting, customized mailing lists, marketing and advertising, and conference exhibits. The Center also is currently working in cooperation with publishers, database producers, software developers, and librarians to create an electronic clearinghouse to provide philosophers with electronic access to "the widest possible range of philosophical literature." You will find the Center's web site divided into such areas as:
POIESIS: Philosophy Online Serials, which provides "searchable online access to a single database containing the full-text of current, recent, and back issues of a growing number of philosophy journals." Publications, a list of the Center's own publications, including bibliographies, reference works, directories, guidebooks, thesauri, and The Philosopher's Index. Journals, a growing list of fifteen journals of philosophy, including such titles as American Philosophical Quarterly, History of Philosophy Quarterly, Inquiry: Critical Thinking Across the Disciplines, and The Owl of Minerva. Software, two software packages for computer-assisted instruction in philosophy. Services, a guide to the long list of professional services the Center can provide, including subscription fulfillment, typesetting, marketing, advertisements in teaching philosophy, conference exhibits, mailing lists, and design training and consulting. Contacts, a list of phone numbers and e-mail addresses of the people who overse the Center's various services . All in all, an impressive set of resources. Not only is the current array of publications and services large, but the Center promises that the scope of its activities will continue to expand. I rate it a must-visit.
