Philosophy Resources on the Internet

Given the central role that academic institutions played in the development of the Internet, it should come as no surprise that an academic discipline like philosophy was represented among the early Internet resources. Philosophy-related Usenet groups and mailing lists have been available for years and have become main lines of communication between specialists, amateurs, and anyone interested in the field. Now that the World-Wide Web has become the dominant Internet medium, both the quantity and quality of philosophy information on the Web are growing.

When my college connected to the Internet two or three years ago, I became interested in collecting Internet resources related to my teaching and research fields--philosophy among them--and directing my students to make use of them. My earliest efforts at creating a Web page with philosophy-related links yielded a list surprising in both the quantity and scope of the information its sites contained. Since that time, I have continued to search the Web periodically for philosophy resources, adding and updating my philosophy links page along the way.

I see my role as a Suite101 contributing editor to provide philosophy-minded members with up-to-date information about the best general and specialized philosophy resources the Net has to offer. I will profile superior sites and foster what I hope will be a fruitful online discussion about anything and everything related to this King of Disciplines. Along the way, I welcome everyone's comments, suggestions, and gripes.
