Question: I want to know of the side effects of taking Choline, Inositol, Methionine and SAMe. Will they react with what I am currently taking? I take Actos and Amaryl.
Answer: The following is a brief rundown of SAMe as extracted from several sources. It is an analog of Methionin, one of the products listed in your question. Choline and Inositol have absolutely no side effects to worry about. The piling on of Methionine and SAMe would be tantamount to taking a double dose, not too serious unless you are taking any other medication that fits the category mentioned in the facts below. I would further caution you concerning SAMe – it will cause gas (flatulence) vomiting, diarrhea, headache and nausea. These are all very transient, but can be uncomfortable. The major worry is taking SAMe with antidepressants which could lead to hospitalizations. You might also be aware that methionine alone, though possibly favorable when used to counteract APAP poisoning resulting in liver damage, can increase homocysteine levels. Homocysteine can be harmful to the body – so there is a reason to be cautious when taking this product. As noted, there are no side effects to be concerned with when taking either choline or inositol so you have no worries here. To conclude, there is only one major concern and that is with SAMe, but only when taking antidepressants. There is nothing in the literature about effects with any other class of medications and that includes your anti-diabetic medications. Some facts about SAMe SAMe is an active lipotrope form of Methionine (an amino acid). It is manufactured within the body (and can be found in almost every tissue), but it is also made synthetically. In Europe, SAMe has been used in clinical studies to treat depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia, demyelination diseases, liver disease, dementia, arthritis, and peripheral neuropathy. Depression SAMe was found to be beneficial to most forms of depression. In Europe, SAMe is prescribed more often than any other type of antidepressant. Several studies have confirmed that SAMe is up to 15% more effective in the treatment of depression than traditional pharmaceutical approaches. SAMe increases both the levels of Serotonin and Catecholamines. Do not attempt to take SAMe if you are already taking Prescription Medications for Depression. SAMe increases the efficiency of these medications. People suffering from Bipolar Disorders should not take SAMe. SAMe's antidepressant properties may induce or heighten the manic phase of this condition. Liver Function Go To Page: 1 2
