As a parent, one must be prepared for those little emergencies that seem to materialize at the most inopportune moments. The skinned knee, the sunburn that you didn't expect because the sky was more than partly cloudy, the little cough that came with a runny nose are all minor emergencies that could blossom into something serious if not properly treated. Usually, when an emergency arises, what should be a simple task to retrieve a needed item from your medical emergency box turns into a scrabbling search and the "if only" rule takes control. If only you'd gathered the items together in one place. If only you'd remembered to replace the once used item, now defunct, when you had the chance. If only! This is the modern era of a typical consumer's awareness of health and concern for the body, and the sundry afflictions that might attack. There is a growing interest in the ability to treat the simple concerns that may have, in the past, caused one to make a trip to the emergency room of the local hospital or to an all-night clinic. Patients are being released more quickly from hospitals as well, making it necessary to have surgical dressings, tapes and other paraphernalia on hand. Though most people recognize the need to prepare for everyday health and first-aid concerns, they are apathetic when it comes to assembling a first-aid kit. Fortunately, stocking and maintaining one is a simple task once begun and an excellent habit to cultivate. It is possible for one to purchase a pre-assembled kit. This is an easy choice and a fine start for most. The kits are available in a variety of sizes, convenient to use, and are simple to replenish after using any enclosed items. The smaller size kits are perfect for tucking away in a car, camper or boat. A good thought is to keep one in your garage at home, or anywhere where tools are used and small injuries are common. Many individuals prefer the flexibility of constructing their own kit. When approaching the project from this standpoint, there are numerous avenues to examine that are not treated in pre-made merchandise. A well thought out homemade kit should contain products for colds, flu, fevers, headaches, cuts, burns and abrasions. Also included in such a kit would be surgical gloves, scissors, a bio-hazard disposal container, surface disinfectant, antimicrobial wipes, and, in case of prolonged exposure to the sun, a good sun-blocker.
