Although your body is a marvelous creation and its back a wonder of construction, it isn't an unbreachable fortress. Good body mechanics, that is the way you utilize your muscle groups and joints, can assist you in avoiding the misery of back injuries. Good body mechanics include lifting loads by holding them close to your body, a practice that reduces excess strain on the back muscles. Good mechanics also includes maintaining those all important 3 curves. By keeping your curves aligned you distribute the weight of a load evenly throughout your spinal column. This helps reduce the risk of injury.

The use of poor body mechanics is dangerous for the back. Even lifting a small weight can put the body at risk of injury and add excessive stress to your lower back. Never reach and bend from the waist since this can force the back to maintain the weight of your entire upper body plus the load being lifted. Such poor habits can lead eventually to disk damage, thus pain and finally, a herniated disk - a condition where the disk is so compressed in the front of the vertebra that the jellylike center is forced out the side or back of the joint. This causes great pressure on the spinal nerves; result: severe pain.

Good posture and proper mechanics can help you to maintain a long and pain-free life for yourself and your back - something you both deserve.
