John Daly on a comeback trail

His last three tournaments? How about fourth, 68th and tied for seventh? At this rate, he will end up around 50th at Disney this week, miss the top-30 on the money list and thus, the Tour Championship. Then he will be mad at himself and take it out on the field at the Southern Farm Bureau Classic, the event for the ‘rest of the guys’ to be held in the same week as the Tour Championship.

Who knows, he might just win the darn thing. The fact is Daly is extremely motivated to crack the top-50 on the World Golf Ranking by the end of the season so that he will be invited to the 2002 Masters. His 1995 Open Championship gave him five-year exemption for the Masters, but his exemption ran out last year. Because he doesn't have a PGA Tour victory since 1994, the only way for Daly to get into his favourite tournament is to finish inside the top-50.

Now on his inexorable journey toward his goal, Daly is ranked 52nd in the world. If he becomes more consistent and avoids big numbers down the stretch, Daly should finish the year as one of 50 best golfers in the world.

Regardless of the end results, 2001 has been an eventful year for Mr. Daly. And he hasn’t been seen shaking on the course like in 1998. All he shakes nowadays is his playing partners’ confidence on the tee boxes; what with the infamous acrobatic swing that would make chiropractor cringe, who wouldn’t be rattled seeing Daly outdrive him by some 30 yards?
