RAT
A comedy about a man who is changed into a rat. Because of this his own family tries to kill him a few times. They do seem to mistreat rats a bit ...but they do have some cute facts about rats and it has a good message even for non-rat lovers (how could anyone who knows a rat or two not love a rat?) PEE-WEE'S BIG ADVENTURE
Toward the end, Pee Wee Herman comes across a pet store that's on fire. Showing more bravery than a guy named Pee Wee should have, he immediately runs into the burning shop. He passes by the snakes, and we discover he doesn't like them very much. First he releases a chimp from a cage, and the chimp helps him rescue the dogs (and at least one cat, if you look carefully). Then Pee Wee rescues some fancy birds, then a bunch of baby ducks, then...rats. About a dozen or so hoodeds, PEWS, and several dark-colored rats (can't tell if they're self-colored or agouti, but at least they're safe). He also rescues the fish, while the chimp is bringing out cages of small critters,and then, finally, the snakes.

MUPPETS FROM SPACE
Gonzo thinks he's a space alien and a paranoid government operative has him captured. Kermit and company, including dear Rizzo the rat, go to rescue him. Rizzo ends up in a lab with a crazed experimenter (David "Courtney Cox" Arquette) and his captive lab rats! Rizzo rallies them, after experiencing the MAZE, to escape. They do so just in time to rescue Gonzo from another scientist(what appears to be a large puppet version of Andy Dick).
The rat Muppets have been integral to the Muppet movies as they were created by Steve Whitmire, who took over a number of voices that Jim Henson had done before his death.

THE ABYSS
Clivia's Review: The rat - a white albino male, I seem to remember - was taught to breathe in a liquid that contained oxygen and he could breathe under "water" so to speak. When things on the submarine go from bad to worse, the rattie almost gets left behind, but the owner opts to rescue him despite having to risk his own life by doing that! Excellent rat moment in movie, I needed a lot of tissues after that scene, I
